Where was ‘The Banshees Of Inisherin’ filmed in Ireland?

The Banshees of Inisherin is a 2022 dark tragicomedy film directed, written, and co-produced by Martin McDonagh. Set on a remote fictional island off the west coast of Ireland, the film stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two lifelong friends who find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them; Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan also star.

The film received nine nominations at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Farrell), Best Supporting Actor (Gleeson and Keoghan), Best Supporting Actress (Condon), and Best Original Screenplay.

If you’ve seen the film, you’ll have noticed the beautiful landscapes within – it really is one of the most stunning showcases of the Irish countryside. Although the island of Inisherin is fictional, the shooting of the movie took place in 2 very real locations in Ireland – The Aran Islands and Achill Island.

This tour offers you the chance to visit these locations with your very own Private Driver in a Luxury Vehicle. Take your time at each location, capture the best pictures and avoid the maddening crowds, as our drivers know all the best spots! We will arrange a traditional pony trap tour of the Aran Islands for you and your group, where you can view the stunning filming locations from the back of the most traditional mode of Irish transport.

The tour also captures the beauty of the Cliffs of Moher, as well as the vibrant city of Galway, known as the City of Tribes – in reference to the fourteen tribes of Galway or the fourteen merchant families who once dominated Galway between the mid-13th and late 19th centuries. Find out if your ancestors are one of these famous tribes, with a bespoke genealogy experience, and trace your roots back to the exact place in Ireland from where your family originated. Established in 1796, Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison in Dublin where numerous revolutionaries were locked up and executed. The guided tour of Kilmainham Gaol starts off at the prison’s chapel, where Joseph Plunkett married Grace Gifford shortly before being executed for participating in the Easter Rising. Visit the cells, still gloomy and dank and continue to the patio where the prisoners were executed. Kilmainham Gaol continues to be an iconic symbol for most of the Irish population, as a symbol of their rebellion against British domination.

Aran Islands Pony Trap Tour

Take a trip with Thomas Faherty around the island in a pony & trap, and see the beautiful sights of Inis Mór the old-fashioned way. Pony & trap tours are a family tradition and date back to the 1940s.

You will hear wonderful stories and interesting island histories, all while taking in the amazing surroundings at a picture-friendly pace.  Stops are made along the route to let visitors explore. You can look for seals during low tide and hike up to Dún Aonghasa. But what makes Thomas and his tours so different? He likes to point out what other tourists may never get the chance to see or have even heard about. Like the wormhole.

No matter the length of your stay on the island, whether you wish for a private tour for two or an afternoon jaunt for ten, a tour can be arranged that accommodates your plans.
