Who Was St Patrick?

Despite being known as the Patron Saint of Ireland, St Patrick was not Irish. He was believed to have been born around 386 AD in Roman Britain, likely somewhere in present-day Wales. His father was a deacon and his grandfather a priest, yet Patrick himself was not particularly religious during his early years. That would soon change.

St Patrick Was Kidnapped and Brought to Ireland

At just 16 years old, Patrick’s life took a dramatic turn when he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and brought across the sea to Ireland. He was enslaved and forced to work as a shepherd on the slopes of Slemish Mountain in County Antrim, in the north of Ireland. For six years he lived in isolation, tending sheep through harsh winters and long nights. During this time, Patrick turned deeply to prayer and faith.

This period would shape the rest of his life.

The Dream That Led to His Escape

One night Patrick had a dream in which a voice told him a ship was waiting to take him home. Trusting this vision, he escaped captivity and travelled across Ireland to the coast. There he eventually found a ship and made the long journey back to Britain and his family.

But Ireland had already changed him forever.

Years later, Patrick had another powerful dream — one where the people of Ireland were calling him back. He began studying for the priesthood, spending many years training in monasteries in France. Eventually he returned to Ireland as a bishop, determined to share Christianity across the island. Patrick travelled widely throughout Ireland, preaching, baptising thousands of people and establishing churches. By the time of his death in 461 AD, Christianity had spread across much of Ireland.

Like many historic figures, the story of St Patrick has become surrounded by legend. One famous story says Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland, though historians note that Ireland never had native snakes. Another enduring legend involves the shamrock, a small three-leaf plant. Patrick is said to have used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity — three parts united as one.
